Chocolate Boxes and Leadership TalksDec 08, 2023
In my boarding school years, anxiety was more than an occasional shadow; it was a relentless presence. I recall a night, the eve of an English presentation, where my nerves weren't just on edge; they were in a freefall. That night, a box of chocolates wasn't just a treat; it was my lifeline. It wasn't hunger I was feeding, but a deep-seated craving for comfort, an attempt to silence the inner critic constantly whispering, "You're not enough."
This battle wasn't merely against the fear of rejection or feeling inadequate. It was an intense struggle against the fear of appearing foolish, of not meeting my own sky-high standards. It was about learning to embrace my vulnerabilities as much as my strengths.
At out recent leadership roundtable for leaders in Life Sciences, it became clear that leadership isn't just about expertise or metrics. It's about the courage to show up as your authentic self, to connect deeply and genuinely and to take full responsibility of your career - and life. It's about leading with vision and vulnerability, inviting others to do the same.
This journey from perfectionism to authentic leadership wasn't just a professional pivot; it was a fundamental shift in how I live and lead. Embracing your true self is more than a skill; it's an act of bravery that changes everything, both in how you lead and how you live.
Keep being bravely you.
